The U.S. government has taken action by revoking the visas of six foreign individuals due to their social media remarks that appeared to celebrate the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, as announced by the State Department on Tuesday.
In a statement shared on social media, the department emphasized, “The United States is not obligated to accommodate individuals who wish harm upon Americans.” They further noted that efforts are ongoing to identify other visa holders who have expressed approval of Kirk's tragic assassination.
Charlie Kirk, known for founding the youth organization Turning Point USA, was fatally shot on September 10 during a debate at Utah Valley University’s Sorensen Center courtyard.
Authorities have charged 22-year-old Tyler Robinson with murder in connection with the incident, and he is currently being held without bail as his trial progresses.
The individuals whose visas were revoked hail from Argentina, South Africa, Mexico, Brazil, Germany, and Paraguay, according to the State Department.
The department reiterated its commitment to protecting U.S. borders, culture, and citizens by strictly enforcing immigration laws.
This visa revocation announcement coincided with the posthumous awarding of the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Kirk by Trump, marking what would have been his 32nd birthday.
Previously, the U.S. had warned that it would take measures against foreigners who praised or trivialized Kirk's death.
On the day of the visa revocation, it was reported that an Argentinian national had made a comment suggesting that Kirk deserved to suffer for his alleged promotion of racist and misogynistic views.
Additionally, a South African citizen reportedly mocked the American public's grief over Kirk's death, suggesting that his demise was exploited to further a white nationalist agenda.
Since the beginning of his second term in January, the Trump administration has ramped up its immigration enforcement, which includes enhanced social media scrutiny, the cancellation of numerous student visas, and proposals to restrict visa durations.
